Happy End of Summer!
Youth Media Educators (YME) Summer Screening Event
Just Think’s 2007 Youth Media Educators “Pioneers” program is wrapping this week. Over the past six weeks, youth from around the Bay Area have been building skills in media literacy education, peer teaching, entrepreneurship, and media production.
“Racial Crossdressing,” “Get Naked,” and “CTR-ALT-DEL” are the YMEs three inspired short media productions addressing racial stereotyping, body image, and technology dependence. The premiere will be presented at the YME Pioneers Premiere Event from 6-9pm at SOMArts Cultural Center on Thursday, August 23rd. This year’s event opens with a reception and community mixer, which includes a youth photography exhibit from the International Rescue Committee; information tables hosted by Youth Noise, World Savvy and the Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP); and engaging media literacy activities.
The YME program is supported by the Kauffman Foundation, the Stuart Foundation and Autodesk, Inc. The Summer Screening Event reception sponsors are Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Rainbow Grocery, and Trader Joe’s (on Masonic Ave. in San Francisco)

Seeking YME Mentor Teachers
As the Youth Media Educators summer program ends, we are gearing up for the school integration of our YME graduates. Just Think is providing an intensive professional development workshop in media education, technology and entrepreneurship to teachers interested in supporting our YME program during the 2007-08 academic year. If you are a Bay Area classroom educator looking for new ways to engage your students and believe in the power of peer-teaching, sign-up to mentor a YME as they exercise their newly learned skills teaching high-school age students throughout the school year.

Additionally, the final outcomes of Just Think’s three-year Media Education, Arts and Literacy (MEAL) project were presented at the first Media Education Research Summit held this past June in St. Louis, MO. Learn more about the MEAL program and its impact on middle school education.
