Well, it has been nearly half a year since we wrapped the YME summer program at SomArts. What a season it has been. We are working with the 11 YME students from 07/08, and a handful of Senior YME’s from 2005 and 2006. Each in their own way, making the most of opportunity.
Unique to the program this year are the YME Mentors. These are teachers at regional schools who have agreed to pair with the YMEs. These mentors will help the YME students implement their programs. So far we have teachers at Thurgood Marshall, Lincoln and Washington in San Francisco. Excel High in Oakland and Kipp King Collegiate in San Lorenzo.
So far, Bea (07) has already presented on “body image”: and the media for a regional charter schools conference. Austin L (07), Shanya (05), Wes and William L. (07) all participated in the World Savvy POWER workshops. (The YME summer video work will be featured as part of their city-wide Media Arts Festival at Zeum.) Austin T. (07) and Nathaniel (05) have each filmed various events with Just Think Productions and other YME-ers are planning workshops for the spring.
It has been really rewarding to watch media literacy education and critical thinking make a sustainable impression on how we look at the world.
