The goal of the project was to create an innovative and cohesive model curriculum demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating media literacy and media production into core middle school curriculum, strengthening critical and creative thinking skills, and improving students’ academic performance.

The program was implemented in two San Francisco Middle Schools, Marina Middle School and Visitacion Middle School. Just Think recruited and trained a total of 16 sixth and seventh grade teachers from the two schools. These teachers developed and conducted media literacy and media production projects in the classroom that met state and district standards in Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, and the Arts. 444 students from the two schools worked on a number of creative and exciting media projects over two academic years.

Evaluation and assessment of MEAL was conducted by the Michael Cohen Group. Evaluation results will be disseminated nationally by the DOE and the AMLA in the upcoming weeks.
