Just Think’s Youth Media Educators (YME) program is a unique training opportunity designed to provide young people with media arts skills and prepare them for the 21st century workplace. Every summer, high school students from all over the Bay Area are chosen to participate in a paid, six-week intensive summer program. For the YME 2008 Just Think’s Program Director will lead a group of media professionals and educators who mentor youth through hands-on production projects. Projects begin with digital photography, storytelling and graphic design and advance during the program to video production, entrepreneurial training and peer teaching. YME Student/Interns learn to critically think about the media as they master the core concepts of media literacy, engage in media production, learn essential workplace skills and gain peer-to-peer teaching tools.

YMEs build important career skills including research, oral and written communications, project management, presentation, interviewing, resume writing, business development and peer mentoring. Once participants successfully complete this summer intensive program, they are hired throughout the school year to serve as peer educators in their schools, with media education events, workshops and programs as well as work on professional video production projects. YME students have organized programs at Balboa, Richmond and Lincoln and at community organizations around the Bay Area. They have gone on to work for Peer Resources, the Student Advisory Council to the SFUSD and the Bay Area Video Coalition and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and more.
Each YME is evaluated throughout their participation in the program and completes with a digital portfolio containing a skills checklist, instructor and peer evaluations, writing samples, a current resume of their training and work experience and samples of their media production work. With the YME program experience behind them and a digital portfolio at hand, YME participants are well equipped to enter the 21st century workplace.
