YME ’07 Summer Synopsis and Promo Video
This summer’s YME ’07 program, “Pioneers” paid youth interns $1000 to learn media literacy education, peer teaching and entrepreneurial skills. After a record number of applicants applied for YME this year, The internship began with 11 students on July 9th and completed August 18th at SomArts Cultural Center in San Francisco.

Again this year, high school students from all over the Bay Area were chosen to participate in this paid, six-week intensive program. Just Think’s Program Director led a group of media professionals and educators to mentor the youth through hands-on production and business panning projects. YME students trained in digital photography, storytelling, graphic design and video production, with an emphasis throughout the course on entrepreneurial training and peer teaching.

YME Student/Interns learn to critically think about the media as they master the core concepts of media literacy, engage in media production, learn essential workplace skills and gain peer-to-peer teaching tools. You can read about the progress over the summer in the summer blog from the students. During the 07/08 school year YME students are hired to serve as peer educators in their schools, with media education events, workshops and programs as well as work on professional video production projects

In past years, YME students have organized programs at Balboa, Richmond and Lincoln and at community organizations around the Bay Area. They have gone on to work for Peer Resources, the Student Advisory Council to the SFUSD and the Bay Area Video Coalition and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Youth Noise and more. Keep your eyes open for student-led projects all over the bay area and for more student work to be posted on our site.
YME ’07 features a unique opportunities for teachers to get paid to participate with the program during the 07/08 year. If you are a teacher or support educator at a Bay Area high school, contact Arthur Grau
